Taking Care of the Bodies We Have
It’s no secret that our bodies are both positively and negatively affected by the choices that we make every day. When doctors examine the lungs of a smoker, they see a vast difference between those and the lungs of someone who’s never smoked. When doctors test for blood pressure and cholesterol levels, they can often see the results of a poor diet or insufficient amounts of exercise. Finally, when doctors examine people’s hearts, they often are able to see the level of care that went into each individual’s health practices (or lack thereof).
The Value of the Heart
The heart is a special organ that pumps blood throughout the whole body through the circulatory system. Without its work, our other organs and bodily functions would be encountering a severe lack of oxygenated blood and nutrients. About the size of a fist and consisting of four chambers, two atria, and two ventricles, the heart is definitely one of the most important parts of the body.
There are many ways in which we can see the direct results of a bad health choice affecting our physical bodies. We can see the bags under our eyes from a night of drinking or little to no sleep, we can detect extra poundage around our midsection in the weeks after the holidays, and we can see plaque build up on our teeth if we skip brushing. If we could similarly see the results of our bad choices on our hearts, many of us would probably make immediate lifestyle changes. However, the damage or help that we provide our heart with isn’t as apparent to us until it’s causing huge problems for us down the road.
It can be tough to fight a battle that is going on inside our bodies, but it’s vital that we do everything we can to support the health of our hearts. No matter your age, there are plenty of ways that you can start being kinder to the “old ticker.”
Thanks for sticking with us as we’ve outlined the reasons for taking great care of your heart. Join us next time for part two of our heart health blog series in which we’ll start talking about some practical ways to take care of your heart.
