There’s no doubt about it, pneumonia can be deadly to elderly patients, and unfortunately, it’s making its way to Honolulu. Because our home health care professionals at Wilson Care want your loved one to be cared for in the best way possible, we’re providing you with tips on how help make feel better if they’ve been diagnosed with pneumonia this winter. But first, what is pneumonia?

What is pneumonia?

Pneumonia is a respiratory condition that is characterized by inflammation of the lungs and is caused by a parasitic, bacterial, viral and fungal infection. When your lungs are healthy, you’ll breathe normally, and your lungs will fill with air, leaving you to feel happy and full of energy. When you have pneumonia, your lungs will fill with fluid and pus when you breathe, making breathing much more difficult. Because oxygen is a viable part of all of the systems in your body, other systems may become affected. The symptoms someone may experience when they have pneumonia include cold, fever, cough, shaking chills, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, diarrhea, headache, sweating, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, tiredness and muscle pain.

Home Remedies That Fight Pneumonia

Here are some tips not only you can help implement, but our home health care professionals will encourage as well:

Tea Tree and Eucalyptus Oils

Both tea tree and eucalyptus oils are antibacterial. This means that they have the ability to fight off germs and bacteria that cause pneumonia. And, eucalyptus oil can relieve congestion with its powerful scent alone by breaking up mucus in the lungs. You can use tea tree and eucalyptus oils by boiling water and pouring droplets of oil into the water. You’ll then breath in the steam and do this three times per day. You can also make a “vapor” rub for your chest by mixing a few drops of each oil with a tablespoon of coconut or almond oil. Rub the oil on your neck and leave on overnight.

Garlic

Garlic is a natural born bacteria killer. It’s been known to kill off bacteria, viruses and parasites that cause pneumonia. Plus, garlic contains allicin. Allicin is an antiviral and antibacterial which helps to fight off illnesses and strengthen the immune system. Use garlic in your food or eat it raw; both suggestions work great!

Astragalus

Astragalus, also known as Huang Qi, strengthens the immune system by relieving inflammation within the lungs. We highly recommend you use astragalus while you cook; however, consult with your physician before use.
