Every year, the list of physical possessions we need seems to grow ever smaller. While getting new toys on Christmas was one of the best parts of childhood, many people in adulthood don’t have a huge need for more things — partly because they’ve acquired so much throughout their life, and partly because they have an income to support themselves.

Recent studies have shown that giving people experiences instead of gifts is the best way to provide lasting happiness.

This couldn’t be more true for senior citizens, who have had a lifetime to acquire possessions, but who don’t have as many opportunities anymore to make lasting memories.

That’s why, at Wilson Care, we strive to provide happiness for our seniors during Christmas with our home care services. Do you have an elderly family member you want to get a Christmas gift for? Consider treating them to these experiences:

A Trip Down Memory Lane

We’re not talking about a literal trip; after all, many seniors are in a position where they need special care and can’t just embark on an expedition. But there’s one special experience you can have with the seniors in your life without even having to leave their home (or care center).

We’re talking about memories! Senior citizens don’t really get a fair hand — here are people who have a literal lifetime of unique experiences, having lived in eras long before our own, witnesses to history we can only read in books. And yet, many seniors are treated like children or otherwise not taken very seriously.

The reality is that there is so much to learn from our elderly, and many of them have years and years of amazing stories to tell. Why not go to where they live, and offer them a night where they talk about their life experiences while you record it?

This can be the gift that keeps on giving — if you chronicle their stories, you can keep them alive in people’s hearts even after they have passed away.

A View of Mother Nature

Most seniors, especially ones who require home care or senior living facilities, aren’t really cut out to go on ambitious hikes. But that doesn’t mean they should be deprived of the wonderful gift of nature. One thing you can provide as a gift for your senior friend or family member is to take them on a drive to the most beautiful views around.

Living in Honolulu, you don’t need us to tell you that incredible beauty is in abundance.

Consider offering a trip wherever they want to go — it won’t be physically taxing on them because the majority of the time will be spent in the car. But it can give you both a moment to bond, appreciate beauty, and share a special moment together in some of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Having a Game Night

Bingo is often a stereotype that’s associated with senior care system. It is, in fact, one of the first things a lot of people picture when they imagine elderly care facilities. But it’s not completely unfounded — many seniors love to play games!

Keep in mind that there are plenty of elderly people with a healthy competitive spirit, and you can bet that a huge portion of them loved to test their minds against others in their younger years, or engage in physical competition through sports and athletic events. Just because they’re old doesn’t mean they’ve lost that! Consider treating your elderly family members to a game night.

The nature of the game night will depend greatly on who you’re playing with. You could have a one-on-one session, or invite their friends or family to join in. You could play board games, well-known card games, or even video games if they’re feeling up for it! It’s just important to get a feel for the types of games and activities your senior relative has a passion for.

A Day With Animals

This one is for the elderly nature lovers in your life. Who doesn’t love animals? Unfortunately, a lot of seniors don’t have the capacity to give a dog all the care and maintenance they need, or they might live in a senior care center where pets aren’t allowed.

One great Christmas experience you can offer is taking them to a local animal shelter or zoo to allow them to bond with animals. If they want to touch them and interact with them, the former is a good choice, while the latter is good for seeing more exotic creatures that you couldn’t have at home.

Home Care Services

Finally, one great gift you can provide for the seniors in your life is offering home care services! Many elderly folks don’t feel cut out for a senior home center, but they have certain needs, which if handled by a professional, would make their lives much easier.

That’s where we come in. We provide home care and assisted living services to all the elderly in Honolulu and the surrounding regions. Additionally, this is a service you can provide yourself if you’re interested in becoming a senior caregiver. We have career paths for people who want to work in elderly care and we’d be happy to look at your qualifications!

We hope you’ll think of the best gifts for the seniors in your life. If one of those gifts is home care services, contact us today!
